Weasels and Whiners: Toxic Teams In Today’s Workplace

A well respected business writer described two workplace personality types that are of interest to the female executive as they are extremely adept at derailing her career. He dubs them Weasels and Whiners.
Weasels are individuals who purposely sabotage the organization, taking every opportunity to undermine management’s authority. This individual stops at nothing to bring an organization to its knees, including introducing a virus into the computer system or refusing to give important messages to her superior.
The Whiner, on the other hand, is not nearly as purposeful, but equally destructive. This person complains about everything – the color of paint used in the conference room, the number of vacation days allotted and the thickness of the toilet paper in the bathroom. This person hates himself and endeavors to make everyone else feel equally miserable.
Both Weasels and Whiners are members of what I call the Toxic Team—individuals who make working at any organization a living nightmare. They size up fellow employees quickly and select those who are vulnerable. They latch on to these individuals and don’t stop until they have accomplished their mission of forcing this person to join their team or to quit.
As a female manager or executive with her eyes on the prize, these individuals are your worst nightmare.
In most work environments, individuals want to be accepted and liked by their co-workers. For many, this means socializing with them even when you don’t necessarily find it comfortable. Beware, as most Weasels and Whiners are crafty. They develop relationships by building alliances around commonplace events such as a recent layoff or transition in management; they make it a point to win you over. You may even find yourself in agreement with the Weasel and the Whiner. It’s a slippery slope, however, from the five-minute bellyache to the Toxic Team’s hallmark daily ritual of lambasting the company.
Weasels and Whiners punish those who try to break rank – whether it’s the cold stares in the lunchroom to outright messing with your career, they take pride in publicly wielding social and “political” power in the workplace.
The good news is: you can escape the clutches of the Weasel and Whiner and stay focused on your own career goals and aspirations by using good judgment and discipline. I will elaborate more on this topic in next week’s blog post!
